From Launiupoko to Lahaina, and Kaanapali to Kapalua, West Maui has a little bit of every thing to offer.
LAHAINA
Lahaina is, of course, a small historic whaling port that is the hub of West Maui. With 14 major historical structures maintained by Lahaina Restoration Foundation, and a multitude of shops and restaurants, Lahaina is well deserving of the title ‘the jewel of Maui.’ Among the restaurants and shops you’ll also find activities. Activities include tours of historical sites, and snorkel sails, whale-watching tours, and parasailing adventures out of Lahaina Harbor. Tucked away in the industrial area just above Lahainatown you’ll find a chocolate factory offering tours and tastings. Not to mention an Adventure Park, fun for the whole family.
KAANAPALI
Kaanapali is the first resort area north of Lahaina. With many award winning resort hotels, lovely vacation rental condos, and single family homes on the hillside, Kaanapali is popular with families. There is also a reason they built the resorts on Kaanapali Beach – it’s beautiful and amazing. Whaler’s Village is a high-end shopping area with several delicious restaurants, including Leilanis, Monkeypod by Merriman’s, and Hula Grill. I happen to love the acai bowls at Island Vintage Coffee!
HONOKOWAI/KAHANA/NAPILI
This stretch of Lower Honoapiilani Hwy is chock-full of condos (vacation rentable and not), and single family homes. With sidewalks most of the way, it’s a great place for walking to the local health food store. Also home to Bad Ass Coffee, Java Jazz, and Pizza Paradiso. Some of the condos front sandy beaches, but most of the coastline is relatively rocky, with people entering the water to paddle board, swim, or kayak. If looking for a vacation condo, this is the most plentiful location in West Maui.
KAPALUA
West Maui’s high-end resort area is second to none. With properties like Ritz Carlton and The Montage, it really is the pinnacle of West Maui. While it boasts lovely condos and single family homes, it is also fortunate enough to experience cooler temperatures and more afternoon sprinkles than Lahaina. For those that live on the ‘hot’ end of West Maui, a trip to Kapalua can feel like a bit of respite. It is also home to one of my favorites spas – Spa Montage. ๐
